What is a TAR file?
TAR (tape archive) dates back to Unix in 1979. It concatenates files with 512-byte headers that record names, sizes and permissions, without compressing anything.
TAR files are usually compressed afterwards, giving .tar.gz or .tar.xz. ConvertCove extracts plain TAR files (ustar, GNU and PAX long names) and can repack them as ZIP for Windows users.
